Jul. 19, 2022 11:45 a.m.
My name is Austin Blythe, and I grew up in Williamsburg, Iowa where I attended school until graduating from Williamsburg High School in 2011. In high school I participated in football, wrestling and track. Upon graduating, I attended the University of Iowa on a full ride scholarship to play football for the Hawkeyes.
I played for Iowa from 2011-2015. During my time there I started 52 games, appearing in 4 bowl games including the 2016 Rose Bowl after a 12-0 regular season start. I was a freshman All-American in 2012, and a Rimington Award finalist, which is awarded to the nation’s top center, in 2015.
After I graduated from the University, I began training for an opportunity to play in the NFL. I was drafted in the 7th round with the 248 pick by the Indianapolis Colts. I spent one year with the organization, starting one game in London. The next spring I was waived and then claimed by the Los Angeles Rams. Over the next four years, I started 69 games including the 2019 Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. In the spring of 2021, I signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, appearing in 4 games. This past spring I signed a one year contract to play the 2022 season with the Seattle Seahawks.
In 2015 I married my wife, Kiley. Kiley also attended Williamsburg High School and the University of Iowa. In high school she participated in cross country and track, graduating in 2011. She graduated in 2014 from the university with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught 4th grade at English Valleys Elementary, in North English, Iowa for two years while I completed my career at Iowa. In June 2016, we welcomed our son, Reed, into the world. Then we had our daughter, Callie, in January of 2020. Our third child, a girl, is due in October via surrogacy thanks to our amazing sister-in-law, Kelly Blythe. |

Upside Down Auto Industry
Oct. 18, 2022 11:45 a.m.
Meeting location at Des Moines Golf and Country Club (thank you for hosting us!) Address (click for driving directions): Get an insight from someone in the know! Rich Willis will address what is the outlook for the auto industry in 2023? Is the auto industry in trouble? Will car sales go down in 2023? Will, the car shortage be better in 2023? What’s happening in the used vehicle inventory? Where have all the computer chips gone? What’s the future of autonomous cars? What’s the future of the electric vehicles? Electric vehicle - the cars are faster and quicker than gas powered vehicles, but a key factor to slower adoption is primarily due to lack of available batteries and charging technology. The average price paid for a new vehicle in the United States in September was $48,000. Rich, Chairman of The Board at Willis Automotive began his career at Betts Cadillac in 1972 while finishing his course work at Simpson College. Now Rich and his two sons Jason and Matt own and operate 9 premium dealerships among other automotive operations in the central Iowa area. The premium auto dealerships include brands: Cadillac, Lexus, Jaguar, Volvo, Infiniti and Mini Cooper. Willis was also a dealer for Hummer until it went out of business. Manufacturers are now strong arming dealers and want facility upgrades every 10 years or less. Every store at Willis has been upgraded.
Willis Automotive has “a passion to provide the ultimate customer experience”.
The dealership employees live their core values and are active in the community including the Civic Center, United Way and over 100 other non-profits in the central Iowa area.
95% of visitors to the dealerships today have been on the internet to look at vehicles and 35% of cars are sold annually through the Willis internet department. Recently Willis has added a pre-owned operation in Waukee which will have capacity for up to 100 vehicles to be on display and also owns Big O Tires.

5 Years in Kabul: Everything My Children Won't Find in Their Textbooks
Nov. 29, 2022 11:45 a.m.
Meeting location at Des Moines Golf and Country Club (thank you for hosting us!) Address (click for driving directions):
Speaker Bio: We know we were "there," and we know that one day, we suddenly "weren't there," but what did it really look like? Who was involved in what, how did daily operations proceed, where did all the money go, and what interesting tidbits never made the national/global news cycle? US Embassy Kabul was a fantastic cultural microcosm. The nightlife was more akin to College2.0 than you'd think, with a very real security threat looming that could sometimes instill fear, but more often offer a sexy bullet point on a resume and a scintillating backdrop to an otherwise dusty, destitute foreign land. It was my job to analyze threats, prepare for all conceivable dangerous situations, and gently control the movements of US diplomats/aides so that I could best protect them from harm and embarrassment.
Bio:
Nick is a former Force Recon Marine, having served two tours in Iraq in '04/'06. He left the Corps to pursue a career in education and earned a degree from ISU. After only one year teaching he decided to pursue a significantly better salary in private security as a Protective Security Specialist/EMT. During his time in Kabul he worked for almost every team on the Diplomatic Security program at US Embassy Kabul, constantly training in tactics and educating his teams in tactical medicine. He personally protected everyone from the US Ambassador down to the lowliest paper pusher, often including the SIGAR (Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction). Nick left security in early 2020 and has been teaching Tactical Medicine internationally since. When Nick isn't working he enjoys getting lost in the mountains, over and over again. He secretly loves FaceTiming his mother from the tops of mountains so that she can also see the incredible views.

President of Iowa State University
Dec. 06, 2022 11:45 a.m.
Meeting location at Des Moines Golf and Country Club (thank you for hosting us!) Address (click for driving directions): Dr. Wendy Wintersteen became the 16th president of Iowa State University on Nov. 20, 2017, after a nationwide search, followed by a unanimous vote of the Board of Regents, State of Iowa. The first woman to hold the university’s highest office, Dr. Wintersteen has served Iowa State for more than 40 years in several capacities. The university's brand campaign, Innovate at Iowa State, captures Dr. Wintersteen’s vision of a university with boundless opportunities for students and faculty to move their innovative and entrepreneurial ideas forward. The centerpiece is the 144,000 square foot Student Innovation Center, the technology-rich campus hub for students, classes and clubs excited to create marketable solutions, hold pitch-off competitions and envision new businesses. The Start Something Network encompasses the growing portfolio of academic courses in innovation and entrepreneurship offered in every undergraduate college. Under her leadership, Iowa State has established national prominence in innovation and entrepreneurship in higher education – ranked #11 out of 300 public and private universities by the prestigious Princeton Review two years in a row. Iowa State also received the 2021 Model Program Award for Excellence in Entrepreneurial Education by the U.S. Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, noting “Iowa State’s program was expansive in its scale and boldly embraced the challenges of engendering innovation and entrepreneurship across its campus.” Dr. Wintersteen is advancing Iowa State University for the 21st century with priorities and aspirations expressed in ISU’s new strategic plan: to be the most student-centric leading research university where students, faculty and staff flourish in a welcoming and inclusive environment; to be the university that fosters lifelong learning, creates opportunities and forges new frontiers; and to be a trusted partner for proactive and innovative solutions. Prior to becoming president, Dr. Wintersteen served for eleven years as the inaugural endowed dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. During her tenure, Iowa State’s agricultural programs ranked in the top 10 worldwide, CALS enrollment rapidly increased to become the third largest college of agriculture in the nation, research grants increased markedly, awards for teaching excellence grew, and the college achieved a 98% placement rate for its graduates. |
