Announcements:

Don't forget we will have a meeting on July 2nd at DMGCC. John Bachman will be the speaker.

Volunteers are still needed for the upcoming Farmers' Market, including Saturday June 22. Remember to keep tips separate.

CJC Big Band will be playing on July 4th at Lions Park.

There is still plenty of time to sign up for the Bunny Harper golf tournament.

Host families are still needed for our exchange student, a boy from Xicotopec.  We know his family from our spring trips to Mexico.  Please let Tom Narak if you know of a great family who would be a wonderful host family.

Three-minute speaker:

Tom Narak talked about the wonderful experiences he and his family have had hosting exchange students, including the future "benefits" of traveling world-wide to see these young people when they have grown to be successful adults.

Program:

Our speaker was Jamie Boersma, the CEO of the Girl Scouts of Greater iowa, and recent national recipient of Characters Unite, given by the USA Network.  The organization serves 14,000 girls in 67 counties, and relies on 4,000 volunteers, both men and women.  The mission of the Girl Scouts is to build courage, confidence, and character in young girls.

The organization is part of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.  Some of the programs supported are Girl Scout troops, after school programs, day and resident camps, and one-time events (like BIG - Believe in Girls").

Girl Scout Cookies teach 5 essential goals: 1) goal setting, 2) decision making, 3) money management, 4) people skills, and 5) business ethics. And a bit of trivia - 1.7 million of boxes of cookies are sold in the Iowa Council.  That's a lot of peanut butter patties and thin mints!
