Rotary Wheel

August 20, 2013

From our Club President:

2013-2014 committees have been formed.  Everyone should have received an email with their committee assignment.  If you have questions on your assignment, please check your emails and/or at one of our upcoming club meetings.  If you have an interest in more than one committee, that is just fine!  Volunteering for more is appreciated!

Upcoming Events:

August 24 and 25.

While not a West Des Moines Rotary Event, the Waukee Rotary is sponsoring a breakfast as a part of Waukee Fest.  The breakfast will be the morning of the 25th from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.  You can check out more details at http://www.waukee.org/waukeefest.html.

September 13.

Brad Helgamo from the Northwest Club (Urbandale) shared information about the 1st Annual NW Rotary Golf Tournament to be held at Urbandale Golf & Country Club @ 11:00 a.m.  The format is a four person best shot.  The cost is $75.00.

September 24.

District 6000 training to be held at DMACC @ 6:00 P.M.

Other:

-          The refugee center in Des Moines is in need of items to furnish a home and kitchen essentials.  If you have some gently used items (or new items) you would like to donate, please visit with President Narak for details on what to do.

-          Peder Malchow previously headed up our dictionary project.  His job duties mean that he can no longer do this.  A volunteer is needed to assist with this project.

Three Minute Speaker:

Tom Nelson handled this for us today.  He is originally from Des Moines and attended Iowa State.  He serves as a Senior Mortgage Loan Officer for Mutual of Omaha Bank.  He enjoys it as every encounter has a happy ending (someone buys a home or saves money by refinancing their current home).  He has been married for 22 years and has two children (twin boy and girl).  He quit golf 3 years ago and not rides bikes and has participated in RAGBRAI.

Program:

President Narak and his wife Carol presented a program on their recent travels to the International Rotary Conference from June, 2013 in Lisbon, Portugal.  Many slides were shared and they were quite interesting.  In addition to the international conference, they reconnected with past Rotary Exchange Students they hosted and met not only the former students but also their families.  If you are thinking of being a host for an exchange student, Tom and Carol can provide you with their thoughts on the life-long benefit that it can provide!
