April 16, 2014: Bicycle give-away at Indian Hills Jr. High. Please contact Harold Hulleman regarding helping with this if you can.
April 29, 2014: We will meet at Johnnies Hall of Fame on Court Avenue in Des Moines. The purpose of the meeting will be to overview the process of operating the orange juice stand at the Downtown Farmers Market this season.
May 1, 2014: Bunny Harper Golf Tournament to be held at Coldwater in Ames. Contact Greg Kenyon if you would like to participate. As in the past, carpooling from Des Moines Golf is very likely!
May 1-3, 2014: District 6000 conference in Ames. Check the district website or with President Tom for more details.
September, 2014: The District 6000 Governor will be making a visit to our club. The final date will be reported at a later time.
Other News of Note:
Host Families will be needed for next fall when we again sponsor a foreign exchange student. The host family will need to reside in the West Des Moines Community School District. If you have an interest, please contact Chris Nelson.
Three Minute Speaker:
Harold Hulleman was the man! He spend 40 years in public education and is married to Linda. Together, they have a combined family with five children. Harold is presently supporting a wide array of those in the medical community and mentioned he will be 75 years young this summer. With that in mind, he is seeking someone (or several) to mentor to assume the primary responsibility for our bicycle project. He will plan to turn over the project to someone in 2015 after a transition period.
Our April 8, 2014:
Presenting our program was Sharlene Muhammad, representing the NAACP. She is active with the Des Moines Branch Youth Council and the ACT-SO program. The Youth Council was founded a number of years ago and then was re-activated in 2012. The focus of the Council centers around pillars of economic development, education, health, leadership, and empowerment. The program is sustained by an annual banquet and other donations. Results of the program indicated that those that participate have a very high success rate in graduating from high school and advancing to post-secondary education or the military.
At present, there are 30 kids in the program ranging in age from 7th grade to high school. One student was present (Antonio Lara). He is young but a very accomplished artist. His talent has been nurtured as a result of this program. His talent was recognized by his teacher (Talta Kern) at Valley Southwoods.
