Rotary 12-12-06 Reminder from Terry McLane: Meeting on 12-19 is Wrap Day! Please bring gift for your assigned recipient & be prepared to wrap! (Not sure if we're having corresponding music.) We were pleased to welcome 3 members of Rotaract: Drake students, Nicole Camarada, President, Alex Stevens, & Raya Dimatrova (from Bulgaria). Nicole gave us an outline of their many activities including Reggie's Sleep Out, & they sold their hand-made greeting cards for a Venezuelan orphanage. They are an active club! Ed Minnick introduced Janette Larkin, representing The Business Record, who gave us the viewpoint of a niche publisher. (Pay up, Todd, for your cover spread.) Unlike the metro dailies, whose main function is that of a "watchdog," the specialty publications like The Business Record limit themselves to a particular field and are published less often. Their subscription base is growing, rather than shrinking, which is a challenge faced by the daily newspapers. For this reason, daily newspapers are starting more "niche publications" of their own. Janette suggested that anytime a person doesn't want to be quoted, a reporter should honor his request to be "off the record." However, to be safe, "Keep quiet!" To get great publicity (like Todd Millang), Janette suggested that the person seeking publication show how he fits into a reporter's quest for unique, pertinent information
