ROTARY WHEEL for March 25th 2014
Editor: Joe Willis

Tuesday 03-25-14: DMGCC for Meeting

Next Scheduled Meeting

Last Week (03-18-13): National Kidney Foundation

Tracy Beck, Chairperson for the Central Iowa Kidney Walk, spoke to our group. For those interested, here are the details for this Fund Raiser:

·         May 5th 2014 at 2:00PM

·         Iowa State Fairgrounds

·         One-mile walk so it is family friendly

·         Anyone can register, either in advance or just show up.

·         Contact: Amy Busak: 222-2264 or amy.busak@kidney.org

Tracy shared some interesting information regarding kidneys:

Kidneys:

·         Remove the waste product from our blood

·         Balance our bodily fluids

·         Help control blood pressure

·         Help create red blood cells

·         Filtered blood goes back in to the veins

·         The byproduct goes to the bladder

At risk of kidney issues and disease if you have:

·         High blood pressure

·         Diabetes

·         Family history

·         Over 59 years old

·         Frequent user of over-the-counter NSAID pain relievers. This would be non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (I-ibuprofen, Naprosin, etc.)

Sometimes it is not detected until it has been progressing for a period of time. It can be identified early, but only if tested:

1.       Urine Test-Looks at the protein level.

2.       Blood Test-How well filtering your blood.

Lifestyle influences your exposure:

1.       Weight

2.       Smoking

3.       Salt

4.       Fat
