Three Minute Speaker: Our speaker was Chris Holman. Chris is with Principal Financial Group and has been a member of West Des Moines Rotary since March, 2013. He was born in Kansas City and by age 5 had lived in 4 cities, eventually moving to Des Moines. Chris attended Dowling Catholic High School where he played drums in the band and was a member of the football and basketball teams. From there, he attended Iowa State, Drake, and eventually found his way to Marquette University in Milwaukee where he graduated. He returned to Des Moines in 2009 and is married to Greg Kenyon’s daughter.
Program: Our speaker, Ray Giacoletti, was introduced by Jim Noyce. Ray is the new head men’s basketball coach at Drake University. He is originally from Peoria and is a graduate of Minot State University. He has been in coaching for over 29 years at both the assistant and head coaching levels. Most recently, he was an assistant coach for Gonzaga. Gonzaga has been very successful as of late but only 18 years ago was going broke and no one in the country really knew much about them. The Gonzaga administration made a commitment to basketball and used it to create a name for the school (ie branding). Gonzaga is now one of the leading programs in all of Division I basketball and the school is well known. Ray is the 26th head coach in the history of Drake University and hopes to brand Drake with basketball just as Gonzaga did previously. Prior to Gonzaga, Ray was the head coach at Utah leading the Utes to a 29-6 record in his first season as head coach when they reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. He was fired from Utah after just two more seasons while posting a record of 25-34 for those years. Success and/or a lack of it seem to come quickly in the sport of basketball. Regarding Drake, he anticipates the Drake job to be one that is a process and commented that success will not come immediately. He feels that Drake University has made a commitment to basketball and has the patience to see it through. When asked for keys to the game, it is in turnovers (minimize them), rebounds (maximize them), and get to the free throw line more than your opponent. If successful with these metrics, winning comes much easier. Watch for this to be a future focus at Drake.
