Rotary Wheel – August 14, 2012

From the August 7, 2012 meeting:

BOARD MEETING

If you would like to attend the monthly board meeting, it starts at 10:45, August 14, immediately prior to the regular weekly luncheon meeting.

NEW EXCHANGE STUDENT

Gloria from Italy will be arriving tonight at the Des Moines International Airport at about 7:40 P.M. on American Airlines.  If you would like to join other Rotarians to greet her, please go to the airport.  The waiting area will likely be in the area that does not require going through security at the base of the escalators on the ground floor.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Janet is also heading up the Root Beer Float fundraiser for Special Olympics and could use a few volunteers to staff the event to be held on August 18th.  This is a good way to involve family and friends!

UPCOMING PROGRAM

University of Iowa President Sally Mason will be our featured speaker on October 9, 2012.  You are invited to bring a guest that day.  If you would like to invite a guest, please let President Chris Nelson know ahead of time so that we have sufficient food for all that attend.

ROTARY DUES & NEW INVOICES

Doug Hillman has sent out dues invoices.  Please see that you pay yours soon to make Doug’s position easier.

FARMERS MARKET

Orange juice sales at our booth at the downtown farmers market remain robust.  While many volunteer slots have been filled, several remain.  Please check the schedule for when more help is needed and sign up if you can.  If you have difficulty signing up, let President Chris Nelson know and he can help you out.

FEATURED PROGRAM

Jamie Bunn introduced our program for today.  The speaker was Jarryd Widhalm.  Jarryd came to share his experiences with us regarding the Ambassadorial Scholarship Program.  He successfully applied for and was granted a one year scholarship to study abroad.  He chose to go to a prestigious university in Monterey, Mexico.  He was immersed in the language and culture.  He found that the application process was both friendly and purposeful.  Questions were posed to him in the application process that involved his discussion of his best service experiences to date and his plans for his community service in the next five years.  The timeline of the process was relatively short with a scholarship answer provided by the same evening as the interview.  In addition to being able to study abroad, the program requires a volunteer project and also speaking with Rotary clubs about his experiences.
