Three Minute Speaker October 7:

Fred Maharray joined our club last Spring.  Originally, he is originally from Creston.  He moved to West Des Moines in 2013,.  He likes to spend time on farms, working out, reading and writing.  Fred shared questions for us on solar power systems.

Program from October 7:

Students that attended a summer RYLA  camp at Grinnell came to speak about the experience, and what a great time they had.  Hira, Ben and Annie shared their daily events from the camp, along with what they learned there.  The camp was a leadership camp that taught them how to work with others that may not share their outlook in life or method of processing information.  They gained some great friends, dove into difficult topics like abuse and addiction and bonded with Rotarians they described as "super laid back and awesome".

The students felt the Ryla camp was substantially different than any other camp they have attended.  They believe their experience at the camp taught them what a community could be.  All three students expressed an interest in continuing with Rotary as they continued in life.

Three Minute Speaker October 21:

After sharing an impromptu invocation, Kristin Pike shared with us a bit about herself. Kristin is an ordained minister that works with the Salvation Army as the Director of Development and Communications. Kristin is married with a daughter.  We were challenged by Maple Syrup Questions. I'm off to make some pancakes, yum.

Program from October 21:

Sophia Ahmed and Bo Atlas spoke about the Des Moines Symphony.  The Des Moines Symphony is a not for profit organization.  They are one of four orchestras in the United States that has a school of music.  They have commissioned world premieres of 18 works in 23 years.  The music can be heard on the Iowa Public Radio classic station as a part of their partnership.  This season marks the 77th year of continuous operation.

As a special treat, Bo played a selection from the current Symphony program Vivaldi's Four Seasons.
