Announcements

Rotary Roadside Clean up is Saturday, October 12 7:45 am.  Meet at Roosevelt High School's parking lot. Wear layers and good walking shoes.  If you have a "pick up claw", bring it along- it will come in handy!  Right now only 3 Rotarians are signed up- many hands make light the load, please join us!

Farmers Market proceeds for Saturday were $800 and our "juicer" is really working well! Volunteers are still needed to complete for the last weeks of October.

President Tom is sending out a Rotary survey which seeks feedback on our club. Thanks in advance for your time in completing it. It is due THIS SUNDAY- OCTOBER 13. If you do not want to email it to him, you can snail mail to 5700 Aspen Dr., West Des Moines, IA 50266.

Robert Gavin was approved as a new member for our club!

Our District Governor will be visiting our club on 10/15. Our club goal for that meeting is 100% attendance.

The Club is working with the United Way to develop a reading and mentorship program for West Des Moines students.

Today's Presentation

Dr. Richard Deming came and spoke about his organization Above + Beyond Cancer.  It was an inspiring and uplifting story about the struggles of cancer survivors.  His 501c3 provides cancer survivors a chance to climb mountains, ride bike races and more.  The program is free for cancer survivors and the application process is highly competitive. Participants are selected on their ability to embody and advocate for specific cancer issues, and not their physical ability or prior climbing or travel experience. Most of the past participants have never been on a hiking or climbing expedition and many have never travelled outside the United States. They frequently have participants who experience their first night of camping with us on the trail.  After the trip is concluded, the participants work as citizen-lobbyists, speakers, writers, and fundraisers, who are driven to reduce the burden of cancer across the globe.
