Club Bulletin for November 28, 2006

West Des Moines Rotary November 21, 2006 The WDM Rotary Club began by welcoming two visiting Rotarians. Todd Sanftner, Sergeant-at-Arms, asked Thanksgiving trivia questions, raising $115 towards scholarship. Announcements included reminders for serving Thanksgiving dinner at the West Des Moines Community Center, and the up-coming Adopt-A-Family in December. The club inducted John Leder, sponsored by Greg Kenyon. We welcome John as our newest member! Our program speaker this week was Robert Andeweg, the city mayor of Urbandale. Residential and commercial development continues to grow in Urbandale, with a majority of the growth occurring west of I-35. Some of the planned capital improvements for the city include transportation interchanges, a community center (if passed in the February 2007 referendum), and the development of the 210 acre Walnut Creek Regional Park west of 142nd Street. The city has entered into an agreement with the Buccaneers, who plan to up-grade the ice facility. Marketing and technology assessments were made through a broadband study, with recommendations concerning wireless access throughout the city. A favorite project of the Mayor's has been the Restorative Justice Program, which provides opportunities for first-time juvenile offenders to make restitution without prosecution. This Week's Program: The Economics of Ethanol.
