Minutes of Rotary Meeting, August 30th, 2011

 

Attendance: 40 members, 2 guests

 

President Jamie Bunn opened the meeting

 

The opening prayer was delivered by Dr. Randy Ehrhardt

 

Announcements:

 

1. The Bicycle Repair Shop will be set up this Wednesday, August 31st.

2. The Tuesday, September 6th meeting will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on 50th Street.

3. The Board meeting will be held in two weeks after the regular meeting.

4. At the start of the meeting, sign-up for Saturday is slim. Only two have signed up between 6:30 – 9:30 and no one has signed up between 9:30 – 12:00.  Please sign up.

5. There was a brief meeting of the Quiddity Committee after today’s meeting.

6. Our Belgium exchange student is at home due to the sudden passing of her father.  The hope is that she will return to West Des Moines. 

7. A wedding is pending for Tyler Brady; his finance supported our orange juice project also this past Saturday.

8. A life time achievement award was presented to Owen Newlin, a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, by the Iowa Corn Growers Association.

9. Valley High School will be hosting a 10 year memorial concert in remembrance of the 9/11 tragedy on September 8th at 7:00 pm in the Valley auditorium.  All are invited.

10. GOOD NEWS.  There is a warranty on the orange juice tent and A New Tent is COMING!

 

The Sergeant of Arms 3 minute speech was postponed.

 

Program:

 

Ruth Haus, Director of Living History Farms and Jenny Deer shared information on the history and programming of Living History Farms.  Dr. William Murray, from ISU, founded the 500 acre farm in 1970 as an opportunity for the public to see, interact and interpret farming life over the centuries.   It is a 501C3, non-profit, historical and educational museum which receives no state funding.  There are three working farms: the 1700 Iowa Indian Farm, 1850 farm, and 1900 farm.  Attractions include the Wallace Visitor’s Center, the Crop Walk, walking trails, the 1875 Town of Walnut Hill and Flynn Mansion, Church of the Land, One Room School House, Tangen Home.  Check the web site, for fall events including the Apple Fest, September 10-11, Photography Day, September 17-18, Farm to Market Day, September 24th, Quilt Show, September 28th – October 2nd, and Corn Harvest, October 2nd.   Halloween activities, Prairie Christmas, Adult Education classes, and Historic dinners at the Tangen House and Farm House are open with authentically prepared meals.    Day Camps, School tours and rental opportunities are available. 

 

The budget is $2.3 million, including earned income of $1.3 million and $1 million raised in contributions. At peak times in the summer, the staff numbers 100; in winter months, 30 staff members are employed.   1200 volunteers clock over 31,000 hours, giving Living History Farms the #1 national honor for volunteer services for museums.   The Flynn mansion, on the National Historic Registry, will be undergoing additional restoration with the addition of the 14th room – a kitchen.
