Rotary Wheel for August 27, 2013

Announcements:

Congratulations to Al Cross for earning a Paul Harris Foundation +1.

Harold Hulleman announced that our bike project can now be found through a Google search.  A new bike has been donated, and we will auction it, as well as a tandem bike, with proceeds used to buy bike parts and helmets.  For those new to our Club, we accept children's bicycles, and then make any needed repairs before giving them to elementary schools for kids that don't have a bike.  Crossroads Elementary School is a recent addition to schools where we will give away bikes.  This editor noted that LearnWest (a WDMCS community Education Program) is offering a bicycle maintenance class this fall.  If I take the class, maybe I can be promoted to the repair team, moving up from washing and cleaning! Harold will be scheduling bike repair nights soon.

Farmers Market - I think that our fresh squeezed OJ and breakfast pizza helped rank Des Moines as the #2 farmers market in the country!  There is still almost two months left, and help is still needed.  Check the calendar or contact Jim Rothermich.

We welcomed Alejandro, our exchange student, to our meeting.  He shared some Mexican caramel candy "Chiclosos de Cajeta," - umm good!

Don't forget to vote on Tuesday, September 3rd.

Three-minute Speaker:

Mark Reed is a Beaverdale native and 2-year member.  He graduated from Dowling and Drake, but is a Hawkeye fan.  He enjoys working on home improvements and is currently training for a half marathon. Mark has a long history of working with non-profit organizations and is the current Director of Institutional Advancement at the Catholic Foundations of Southwest Iowa.

Speaker:

Dan Reed, the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development at the University of Iowa, began by telling us that every child is born curious, but conformity sometimes takes away that curiosity.  Passion is what drives discovery.  He told us how public universities are working with academia, government and industry to drive economic development and innovation and new partnerships with business.  Dan ended with "the only infinitely renewal resource is knowledge."
