Rotary Bulletin for May 20, 2014

Last Week’s Program:  Lisa Remy introduced Lillian Sanchez, a senior at Valley.  Lillian was sponsored by our club last year to the Rotary Youth Leadership Activity (RYLA).

Lillian is active in many school activities.  She is a member of National Honor Society, school ambassador and participated in track and field (before her recent knee injury).

Lillian talked about her experience at RYLA and all she learned in terms of positive thinking, motivational speaking, learning the reasons behind the four way test and the spirit of Rotary.  She experienced many opportunities in leadership and team building during the three day event.

Lillian was so inspired by her experience that she applied to be a counselor for this year’s RYLA event which again be held at the Wartburg Campus in Waverly, Iowa.  Hundreds of students from around the state will converge and will be fortunate to have a student like Lillian to serve as a leader.

Following her recent graduation from high school, Lillian plans to attend University of Iowa where she will major in ethics and public policy as part of pre-law track.  She wants to work in the legal system to help victims of domestic and sexual abuse.

Lillian is a tremendous ambassador from West Des Moines.

Tom and Lisa mentioned that this year there will three students sponsored from Valley.  Two who were selected by the faculty and one who self-nominated.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Joe Hrdlicka of the Des Moines AM Club gave an announcement concerning the upcoming city wide breakfast meeting on June 20^th at the Drake Olmstead Center.  Registration is at 7:15AM with the program starting at 8:00.  The program will feature Naomi Tutu. She is the third child of Arc Bishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa.  President Tom announced that our club has reserved 50 spots for the event and that the meeting on June 20^th and will take the place of our normal Tuesday meeting.

BIKES BIKES BIKES:

Harold reports that we are about out of bikes.  The inventory is nearly gone and he could use help in obtaining some more bikes and doing some repairs.  It is a symptom of a successful program that we are running out of bikes.  Tom mentioned that he had been contacted by another area club who may have some ideas about helping us with our inventory.

Farmers Market:

Signups are needed for some coming weeks.  Tom circulated a paper signup sheet and also reminded members that they could online and signup on the Rotary google calendar.

Host Family Needed:

Chris Nelson reminded us that time is running out to schedule a first family for the next school year.

Greeters:

Pat Grodt reminded us that she is circulating a sign-up sheet for greeters for the coming weeks.  Please sign up and take a turn.

Three Minute Speaker/Sergeant at Arms:

Tony Paustian gave an overview of a current pet peeve of his concerning time management and focus.  He reminded us that time is finite and that we all have the same amount of hours in the day but that some people are more focused and are able to accomplish more.

This led to a discussion by Tony about many things that he sees as time killers and things that should be avoided.  He mentioned email, internet surfing, television, meetings and irrelevant conversations among others.

In an interesting observation, Tony noted that death is the ultimate killer of time.  No argument there.
